Nanotechnology - the science of the miniature, and the technology of the future - is one of the most exciting and wide areas of research which may lead to the greatest technological advances of the 21st century. In the next 10 years, nanotechnology will touch the life of nearly every person on the planet. Nanotechnology has not only revolutionary commercial applications but also holds enormous promise in providing safe drinking water, low-cost lighting systems and better agro output to the world's poor.
Professional areas in Nanotechnology
The two major categories of Nanotechnology are Nanoscale technology and Molecular manufacturing. Nanoscale technology covers small structures and can be used for introducing stronger materials, better medicines, faster computers and so on. Molecular manufacturing is an attempt at building mechanical and chemical manufacturing systems that join molecules together.
Additional Skills Required
Nanotechnology is not a management profession. This is a research field. As a part of the research students have to study the characteristics of nanoparticles. Therefore it is important for the student to have grip over physics and chemistry subjects. Having good knowledge in Mathematics and computer programming can be an added advantage.
In areas as diverse as designing medical diagnostic devices to building better batteries, from creating cosmetics to enhancing energy efficient windows, from auto and plane manufacturing to researching the nature of matter itself, knowledge of nanoscale science and technology will be increasingly important during upcoming years and decades. Current applications of nanoscale science and technology, and thus career opportunities, exist in areas such as:
- Electronics/semiconductor industry
- Materials science including textiles, polymers
- Auto and aerospace industries
- Environmental monitoring and control
- Food science including quality control and packaging
Minimum of 50% aggregate in class X & XII and a minimum of 60% in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. The medium of instruction is English therefore students will need to meet specific English proficiency requirements.
