The Information Science and Engineering department is one of the pioneering departments of NMIT. The department was established in 2001. It is progressing dynamically in academics and research. Currently, the department offers a 4-Year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) programme in Information Science and Engineering with an intake of 120 students, 2-Year M.Tech programme in Computer Network & Engineering with an intake of 18 students and a PhD programme. Research Centre (VTU) status was granted in the year 2011-2012. Permanent affiliation has been granted by VTU for 6 years from 2010 -11 onwards.
The objective is to educate, train and develop world class research and IT professionals with a mastery of not only hardware and software skills, but also soft skills for professional success.
The department motivates the students to take up research, interdisciplinary and community projects involving interactions with organizations like ISRO, DRDO, IISc, DELL, IITs, NIT, GE, JNCASR, KPCTL, Infosys, IBM, Agricultural departments, etc. Other than the curriculum projects, faculty is undertaking funded research projects, which reduces the gap between academy and industries. Also the department encourages students to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for enhancement of their social and professional skills.

Admission to I year / I semester Bachelor Degree in Engineering / Technology shall be open to the candidates who have passed the second year Pre-University or XII standard or equivalent examination recognized by the University.
In addition the candidate shall have secured not less than forty five percent (45%) marks in the aggregate with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with any one of the following subjects, namely, Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Biology,Computer Science and Electronics.
Provided that, the minimum marks for the purpose of eligibility shall be forty percent(40%) in optional subjects in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and OBC candidates from Karnataka. Provided further that, the candidate shall have studied and passed English as one of the subjects.
