The Department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 2002. It offers a richly integrated curriculum of education and research to its students. The Department offers Bachelor degree in Engineering (BE) with an intake of 120 students and the current intake is increased to 180 for the academic year 2012-13. Other Courses offered are M.Tech in Thermal Power Engineering and M.Tech in Machine Design with an intake of 18 students and 24 students respectively. The department also offers M.Sc. (Engg.) through research and Ph. D. programmes.
The Department Students have variety of opportunities to investigate in broad range of research areas. Some of the specific areas include Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Methods, Centrifugal casting, Stir Casting, Robotics, Computer-Aided Design, Manufacturing and Tribology.
Much of the research is conducted within the department and some projects are carried out in collaboration with other departments and other R&D institutions. The faculty and students have published many research publications in leading National and International journals and conferences. Some of our faculty are Fellow of various National Academies in science and engineering and have received recognition in the form of National and International awards.
The Department is well equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructural facilities in thrust areas and also received funding from agencies such as IEDC, DRDO, VTU and public and private industries for projects. Faculty members render assistance to leading industries through technical advice and consultancy services.

Admission to I year / I semester Bachelor Degree in Engineering / Technology shall be open to the candidates who have passed the second year Pre-University or XII standard or equivalent examination recognized by the University.
In addition the candidate shall have secured not less than forty five percent (45%) marks in the aggregate with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with any one of the following subjects, namely, Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Biology,Computer Science and Electronics.
Provided that, the minimum marks for the purpose of eligibility shall be forty percent(40%) in optional subjects in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and OBC candidates from Karnataka. Provided further that, the candidate shall have studied and passed English as one of the subjects.
