M.A. in Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design The domain of Visual Communication encompasses graphic design, typography, advertising, packaging, illustration and design for analogue and digital media (Web Design, Motion Graphics etc.). Contemporary dialogues between traditional print-based practices and the new digital screen-based media, introduced in lectures and discussed in seminars, will allow the possibilities for visual communication to become more socially interactive and conceptually challenging. You will be encouraged to develop your potential based on your specific aims and interests. You will also have the opportunity to engage with the contemporary issues of visual semiotics. The M.A. program in Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design offers a rigorous study within a wide spectrum comprising visual arts, visual communication design, plastic arts, mass communication and related disciplines.
Students can be admitted from diverse disciplines, backgrounds and formations, however, these students should take two deficiency courses from the undergraduate program, namely Perception & Design Concepts and Human Centered Design in order to be able to continue their program successfully.
Applicants are expected to satisfy general admission requirements of the Institute. Applicants to the MS program should have undergraduate degree with a CGPA greater than 2.5 / 4.
Applicants are expected to satisfy general admission requirements of the Institute. In general, students who wish to pursue a given graduate program in the Faculty of Business and Economics, but have completed a BA/BS in another field may be admitted to the program, subject to successfully completing selected prerequisite courses from the related department.
Documents needed for application to Graduate Programs
An official transcript of all university-level courses taken. A comparative mark/grade table if CGPA on the transcript is not out of 4.00.
Attested photocopies of diplomas received from a university or equivalent institutions (i.e. 4 years study bachelor degree). English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English.
Documentation of scores received for English and academic proficiency exams/tests. This is not valid for the programs in which the medium of instruction is Turkish. Native speakers should indicate the place of birth and citizenship. All others should provide documents of any one of the below given English Proficiency Tests.
Three letters of reference (not required for EMU graduates).
Give details of any grant/scholarships that you have already been awarded (valid for your studentship at EMU) (add documents).

Statement of Purpose / Intention (Please submit on a separate sheet: Your purpose in applying to the program chosen, explaining your motivation as well as the areas of specialization which would be of interest to you within the discipline).
A photocopy of your passport or I.D. card.
Two passport-sized (approx. 6 cm x 5 cm) photographs.
Program specific documents: Architecture (Ph.D. & Master): Portfolio.
Candidates are required to submit a document of financial guarantee showing that sufficient funds are available for tuition and living expenses.
General Admission Requirements
Applicants for master‘s programs with thesis must possess a bachelor’s degree with CPGA > 2.50/4.00. For some programs such as professional degree programs, CGPA‘s of 2.00-2.49 may be acceptable subject to Faculty Board decision. Applicants for doctoral programs must possess a master‘s degree. The Turkish citizens should have an ALES score of a minimum of 55 received within last three years. GRE (mathematical) = 610 or GMAT= 450 are equivalent to ALES=55. In some programs additional requirements may be expected. For any further details related departments should be consulted. However students applying for Non-thesis Master‘s programs are exempted from ALES.
An applicant who does not possess the ‘ALES’ certificate may register as a special student. No diplomas are issued for special students. However such students receive a document issued by the Registrar‘s Office specifying courses taken and grades obtained. At most half of the credits necessary to complete the program can be transferred from the program registered as a special student to the current program of study when the student applies as a regular student.
English Language Requirement
For the programs whose medium of instruction is English all written work is assessed at standard international levels of academic English. Hence, all applicants for whom English is a second language is required to present a recent TOEFL or IELTS score or to pass a proficiency examination organized by EMU. English Language Tests and their minimum scores accepted by EMU (valid for both masters and doctoral programs) are listed below. The tests should be taken within last two years except for ÜDS which is valid for lifetime and KPDS valid for 5 years.
