Don’t you just love holidays? We are sure you are eager for Christmas to come. After weeks of intense lectures and course work for some, it’s only right that you get some time off to relax. Semester breaks are perfect for this. No stress for at least four weeks, no need to wake up so early to attend boring lectures and so on. All you can think of is how you are going catch up on all the interesting series that you have missed and the fun you are going to have. After all, that is what semester breaks are all about. But is that really true?

Agreed, semester breaks are important to help you relax and get refreshed. No one expects you to study 24 hours a day non-stop. However, do you know that the purpose of semester breaks go beyond relaxing and having fun alone? If you plan wisely, you can make the most of your semester break while you still get the well-deserved rest that you need. Here are 5 things you should consider doing during these anticipated holidays:

Learn a new skill – Let’s give you the fact as it is; having a wide range of skills is what will set you apart from others in the corporate world and it will open doors of opportunities. Employers are not only looking for people who are sound academically. They also want people with a diverse range of skills. Another bonus for learning a new skill is that you may stumble on something that could lead you to the path of being an entrepreneur. There are many skills you can learn: photography, make up, catering, graphic design, writing etc.

Get a part time job – Most semester breaks fall during seasonal holidays so there are always ample of part time jobs that will be available. Aside from the obvious extra income you will earn, you will get to know what being an employee is like and you can begin to map out your career path by ‘testing’ different jobs.

Travel – When we say travel, we are not saying you should go to the next town within the country you are in. Go to another country entirely. By all means, explore the country you are in but also explore the continent. If you are studying in London, you can visit France, Germany, Spain etc. Travelling exposes you to different cultures and ways of doing things which expands your mind. With a good saving plan and budgeting you will be able to do this.

Become a Volunteer – One of the great things about being in university is that there are so many organisations you can join and causes you can get involved in and engage with as a volunteer. Not only will this look great on your CV, you actually get to learn new things and make an impact in people’s lives.

Create memories – Many people don’t realise it but the years in university fly by (really they do). While we want you to be focused on the main reason why you are in school, we also want you to create great memories. Hang-out with friends, do something you’ve never done before, engage in interesting activities. Whatever you do just make sure it is something that when you look back in five years time, you can truly say that your university days were amazing. Semester breaks present the perfect opportunity to create such memories.

Make the most of this christmas holiday. Do one of the five things we have suggested.
