It’s always amazing when I see students doing the one/two night cram session before the finals to try and download the whole textbook and sometimes a whole list of textbooks into their brain hoping against hope that the answers will resurface at the next day’s exam. While all the piling in might work and sometimes may not work, this technique is next to torture to the brain. Your brain is certainly capable of taking lots of information but under a gut load of pressure, tension and stress there is higher chance that you will forget more often than not.

All through my years as a student, I’ve learned a few apt methods that spare me the stress of force-feeding myself information right before the big day and surprisingly enough it has proven to hold virtue until this day. Without further ado, they are;

01)  Competent listening

What I’ve come to realize, is most students squander the classroom lecture time busy with smart-phones under the desk and friends in the opposite chair coming into the big picture. Classroom learning and proximal listening can eliminate another 100 hours from your study schedule. Instead of thinking it is wasted time to listen to a boring lecture, take the boring out of the equation and give rise to potential learning.

02)  24 hour Revisal Method

It is a scientifically proven fact that if a day’s lecture is revised and reread within twenty four hours of it, the brain designates it into the primary storage box and you are more likely to remember it while revisal for the final exam without much hassle. Allocate two to three hours after class each day to go through what you’ve learnt and understand all the concepts which I assure you will free you of toxic cramming at the end of the run.

03)  Understand not Learn

Understanding and learning broaches two different areas of the education concept. Learning comes with repetitive practice and rereading and a lot of struggle I wouldn’t put myself into. Understanding on the other hand makes your brain free to grasp in the concepts by figuring out how each step was derived and how each statement came into place and why the concept has come into practice. Whether it is a big derivation you are trying to memorize or a text you are trying to simplify, understanding is the way to go about it.

04)  Short Notes

Short notes are a very different method from drawing up notes for a class. Short notes are a personalized way of teaching the subject who you are and how you are going to conquer it. A favorite choice of stationary, a few glitter or color pens, some stickers and a few pictures can make your notes look interesting and pleasing to read while the content proves to be the important points of the course that you need to remember.

05)  Online Learning –We might not realize it at the time but we tend to store in a lot of statistics from the YouTube videos we watch, the eBooks we read, the articles we follow on social media sites. This is more of a tertiary and unsuspecting way of learning because we really don’t know what we are grasping until we face an examination question we find ourselves knowing the answer to. So in order for this technique to produce yield, follow the method of reading anything that you see. Reading for fun can save you at times.

Leave the last nights before the exams for answering a few practice questions and skimming through your notes. Follow up these tips in advance and trust me your life as student will be a lot more stress free.
